Floating IP

Floating IP

High availability and seamless service migration can be critical in maintaining uninterrupted connectivity. Our floating IP service is designed to deliver exactly that! Allowing you to move a public IP address between VPS instances or use for NAT servers.

Note that this functionality is currently available exclusively in our California, Fremont data center.

What Is A Floating IP?

A floating IP is a public IP address that isn’t permanently bound to a single VPS. Instead, it can be dynamically reassigned to different servers within our network. This capability is ideal for:

  • Failover Situations: Quickly moving an IP to a backup VPS if the primary server experiences an outage.
  • Service Migration: Seamlessly transferring your service from one machine to another without having to update DNS records.
  • NAT Usage: For scenarios where you need an additional public IP to temporarily handle NAT (Network Address Translation) operations, our service can be applied—enhancing flexibility in your network architecture.
  • How Floating IP Works

Our service is powered by an advanced network infrastructure that ensures smooth IP reassignment, without requiring any configuration changes on your VPS:

  • Provider-Managed Routing: The floating IP is managed by our backend routing system. When traffic arrives at your floating IP, our network automatically directs it to the VPS currently associated with it. This is true whether you’re using the IP for normal service traffic or as a temporary NAT IP.
  • No VPS Configuration Needed: The floating IP functions entirely at the network level. Once it is assigned, no manual configuration is needed within your VPS’s operating system—making setup and maintenance straightforward.
  • Manual Assignment Process: Unlike automated systems, our floating IP service is currently a manual process. To reassign a floating IP (whether for failover, HA scenarios, or temporary NAT needs), you’ll simply need to contact our support team.

    Availability And Scope

Currently, our floating IP functionality is available only at our California, Fremont location. This means:

    Geographic Limitation

All floating IP reassignments, failovers, and NAT usage are managed from our Fremont data center. We encourage you to consider this when designing your network architecture, especially if geographical redundancy is part of your planning.

    IP For NAT Servers

In addition to high availability use cases, you have the option to add a floating IP as a temporary address to NAT servers. This allows you to quickly expand your public IP resources without long-term commitment or permanent configuration changes.

    How To Get Started

Since this service is manually provisioned, initiating a floating IP assignment is as simple as reaching out to our support team:

  • Contact Support: When you need to set up or reassign a floating IP (whether for failover, migration, or temporary NAT use), contact our support team with your request.
  • Specify Your Needs: Clearly state whether the floating IP is required for a high-availability setup, as a failover IP, or as a temporary IP for NAT on your server. Provide the necessary VPS details where the IP should be assigned.
  • Our Team Will Do The Rest: Once your request is received, our support team will adjust the routing and configuration on our backend. There’s no need for additional configuration within your VPS.
